Angi vs Thumbtack for Contractors: Buying Guide

Compare Angi and Thumbtack by billing event, homeowner path, competition, budget controls, contract exposure and cost per sold job.

In this article

Angi vs Thumbtack is a comparison between two contractor marketplaces, not a choice between shared and guaranteed-exclusive leads. Both can connect a contractor with homeowner demand while leaving qualification, estimating and sales work with the business. Compare their actual account terms and complete cost through the same outcome.

Angi’s current Pro agreement makes the account-specific contract central. Thumbtack’s official guidance emphasizes targeting, service-level lead prices and a weekly budget. The better fit depends on the live account terms and cost per accepted job, not the brand with the lower anecdotal lead price.

Disclosure: theBuildd sells a one-buyer residential lead service and competes for the same acquisition budget. We have not purchased or tested Angi or Thumbtack leads. “Angi vs Thumbtack” appeared in Google US English suggestions checked 23 September 2026; that is an unsized directional signal, not search-volume evidence.

Angi makes the contractor order decisive

The Angi legal center rechecked 23 September 2026 lists Angi Pro Agreement version 1.4 as current, effective 12 May 2026. It identifies HomeAdvisor Inc. doing business as Angi Pro and incorporates the contractor’s onboarding contract. The onboarding contract controls when the documents conflict.

The agreement says a lead may go to multiple pros based on homeowner choice and that a customer may choose not to hire. It does not publish one national price for every service and location. It also says an early termination fee applies only when the onboarding contract includes one.

That makes the buying file essential: save the signed order, price schedule, service categories, geography, spend rules, renewal date and credit policy. A general Angi review cannot replace those account terms.

Thumbtack emphasizes settings and customer choice

Thumbtack official guidance reviewed 20 August 2026 described direct leads that begin when a matching customer contacts a professional with targeting enabled. It also described opportunities, where a professional may contact a customer who first reached another pro and is not charged unless that customer responds under the cited guidance.

The same official material described maximum or exact lead-price settings and a weekly budget. Those controls can limit exposure and tune accepted services. They do not turn a charged connection into an appointment or job.

The Thumbtack Pro page returned an HTTP 202 response without readable copy on 23 September. Its help URLs returned HTTP 200 shells without readable article text in this environment. The comparison therefore keeps the August evidence dated and asks buyers to verify live settings and policy inside the account.

The Thumbtack Pro review owns the single-product billing and refund checklist.

Competition works differently from one-buyer delivery

Angi says a homeowner’s choice can result in multiple pros. Thumbtack describes customers choosing professionals through a marketplace with limits in parts of the journey. Neither cited product is a one-buyer promise from the provider.

Competition can be workable when the contractor has strong proof, rapid intake and capacity to quote. It creates cost when several estimators pursue the same project or when profile and response work is omitted from the acquisition ledger.

Ask both platforms:

  1. What event creates the charge?
  2. How can the homeowner reach other pros?
  3. Can another product or affiliate create additional competition?
  4. What targeting and budget controls apply?
  5. Which failed contacts qualify for a remedy?
  6. What term, renewal or cancellation condition applies?

Compare net cost through one outcome

Do not compare Angi’s invoice total with Thumbtack’s cost per contact and call the lower number the winner. Use complete net spend and the same cohort stages.

cost per held estimate = net platform spend plus attributable intake cost divided by held estimates

cost per sold job = net platform spend plus attributable sales cost divided by sold jobs

Record charges, approved credits or refunds, two-way contacts, accepted scope, appointments, held estimates, proposals and jobs. Keep Angi product paths and Thumbtack direct leads or opportunities visible rather than blending everything into “marketplace.”

If one source produces no held estimates or sold jobs, record spend and zero outcomes. Do not discard non-response contacts after paying merely because they weaken the average.

Which marketplace should a contractor choose?

Choose Angi when the current written order, marketplace reach and account economics fit the company and the contract exposure is acceptable. Choose Thumbtack when its adjustable targeting, service-level price controls and weekly budget fit capacity better. In either case, require the same service, geography and outcome ledger.

Neither is automatically better for every trade or ZIP. One may win on a small service and lose on a high-ticket project. The test should preserve service, territory, response rule and reporting window so the platform difference remains visible.

The Angi Leads review provides the current Angi diligence questions. The marketplace-versus-exclusive guide explains when testing a one-buyer source changes the actual failed condition.

An opt-in is the opening, not the answer

It helps to name the stages. Any paid enquiry from either platform is consent plus a stated need. A qualified lead is what you have after checking that the need matches what you sell, in a place you serve, for someone who can authorise it.

For this work, a reached homeowner has to confirm:

  • how the billable event is defined and how many buyers receive it
  • whether a person spoke to the homeowner first
  • address and trade against your coverage
  • the criteria you wrote down before spending

Who makes that call is a purchasing decision, not a detail. Base plans leave it with your team. Optional monthly dispatching puts our callers on it, qualifying reached homeowners against your agreed criteria before handing over by live transfer or booked appointment. The opt-in goes to one buyer either way, and neither option guarantees contact, qualification or a job. See what counts as a qualified lead for the stage-by-stage version.

Frequently asked questions

Is Angi or Thumbtack cheaper for contractors?
There is no universal public answer. Angi commercial terms depend on the contractor order, while Thumbtack prices vary by service and market under the account controls described in its official guidance. Compare actual net spend through the same outcome stage.
Do Angi and Thumbtack send exclusive leads?
Do not assume one-buyer delivery. Angi Pro terms say the agreement is not exclusive and a lead may go to multiple pros based on homeowner choice. Thumbtack describes marketplace customer choice and limited competition rather than a one-buyer provider promise.
Which platform gives contractors more budget control?
Thumbtack official guidance reviewed in August 2026 described service-level lead-price controls and a weekly budget. Angi commercial pricing and buying structure belong in the contractor order. Verify both current accounts before comparing.
Did theBuildd test Angi or Thumbtack?
