A hailstorm goes through on a Tuesday afternoon. By Wednesday morning every roofer within forty miles is working the same neighbourhoods, and the homeowners with visible damage have already heard from three of them.
Storm work is the clearest example of why speed and exclusivity matter more in roofing than in almost any other trade.
Why the window is so short
Two things compress it.
The first is that storm damage creates urgency the homeowner did not plan for. They are not researching contractors for a month. They want someone on the roof this week, and often an insurance conversation alongside it.
The second is that everyone else can see the same storm. Demand and competition arrive at the same moment, which is not true of a planned replacement.
Cost and claims figures are published industry data, not theBuildd-specific results.
With replacement values at that level, a single storm week can be worth more than a quiet month. It is also the week when a shared lead hurts most, because the homeowner you paid for is fielding calls from the three roofers who bought the same name.
What actually decides who gets the job
Not price, most of the time. In storm work the deciding factors are usually:
- Who reached the homeowner first, while the damage was still the main thing on their mind
- Who could get on the roof soonest
- Who sounded like they had done an insurance claim before
- Who turned up when they said they would
Three of those four are about responsiveness rather than pricing. That is the part you control.
How we handle storm-driven demand
Every homeowner is called by a person on our team before the lead goes out. In storm season that call does extra work: it confirms there is real damage and real intent to get it looked at, rather than a general worry after seeing the news.
The lead then goes to one roofer, the one holding those zip codes, by text and email within 10 minutes. Nobody else buys that homeowner from us.
Volume in a storm week can move a long way above a normal one, though it depends on the storm, the territory and how much of it you hold.
What to have ready before the season
Decide now who picks up the phone at 7pm during storm week, and what they say. The roofers who win storm work are almost never the ones with the best pricing. They are the ones who answered.
Get the crew schedule, the callback rota and the inspection slots agreed before the sky does anything. A lead delivered in 10 minutes is worth nothing if it reaches a phone nobody is holding.
